The Face of First Generation

Growing up in a small town, it's easy to believe you have limited choices. And while some might be content with just gazing up at the stars, others like Rebecca Sheridan are driven by the ambition to reach up and grab one for themselves.
The first in her family to attend college, Rebecca left the comfort and security of her rural Texas home to attend UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management. For many first generation college students like Rebecca, the challenges begin before the first day of class. Without the experience of parents to rely on, even the college admissions process seems formidable.
"I didn't understand the enrollment process; that I needed to take the SAT or that I needed to file for financial aid, or anything. I missed deadlines and opportunities because I didn't know who or where to go to."
Even after arriving on campus, the usual challenges all freshman face can be particularly daunting for first generation students like Rebecca. "When you're the first in your family to attend college you feel different," said Rebecca. "It was harder to fit in with everyone else. It's all very intimidating." One bright spot for Rebecca was the day she learned she had received the First Generation in College Scholarship. "It was a wonderful surprise and made me realize that there were people out there who really wanted me to succeed and who knew I needed help," she said. "It gave me the hope I needed."
Buoyed by news of the award, Rebecca declared a double major in Event and Hospitality Management and is determined to take advantage of the opportunity this scholarship provides. "UCF has opened my eyes and ears to what's possible for my life," said Rebecca. "I know I can go wherever I want in the world because of UCF and this scholarship."
Rebecca is wasting no time in pursuing her dreams. She's committed to using her UCF experience to see the world beyond rural Texas. This summer, Rebecca hopes to intern at a hotel in Alaska; maybe even Italy.
Wherever her effort and ambition takes her, Rebecca's enthusiasm for UCF and the First Generation in College Scholarship is undeniable. "I love this scholarship," says Rebecca. "It's not going to be wasted on me!"
